I have honestly been thinking on what to write about courage, because it is such a topic that has made me who I am today.
My mind traveled far back when I completed secondary school in 2009. While in my SS2, I was part of the group that formed the Excellent Actors and we had so many weekend dramas and sometimes represented the school in drama/play. Weekends were days I looked forward to because being on stage gave me a better feeling about myself (Story for another day). So as soon as I finished my secondary school in 2009, I was eager and determined to pursue my acting career in Nollywood. I saw the way some actors do their thing and I loved it.
But there was a problem! Who was I to tell my parents that I wanted to take acting seriously? When what was on the table was my WAEC, JAMB, Admission, and Choice of Course and lots more…. Besides, I have always been a science student and I didn’t have such guts to look into their faces and say I want to act. My parents can be very strict and no one in the family has been in entertainment professionally. It was a heavy burden and truly, I want to pursue this passion that has brought smiles and life to me. So in 2010, I decided to enroll in a film school to study acting and then I gradually launched myself into the film world. All these happened without my parent’s knowledge and by the time they knew, they had no choice other than to support me. MY POINT HERE IS COURAGE. It takes courage to be a trailblazer, an achiever, a leader, an entrepreneur or whatsoever. It takes courage to be real and face life meaningfully.
When you do something out of the box and someone says “you get mind oo”- that literally means you’re courageous. To be courageous means to be brave. You may have some goals and what you need to achieve those goals may be far beyond you, courage is what keeps you on it and makes it achievable. It’s very easy to give up without courage. It’s very easy to take life as it comes without courage. Courage is what triggers your mind to action and create solutions. Courage eliminates fear or setbacks and keeps you focused. So even when I gained admission into the university to study biochemistry, I took it with courage; and I remember sharing with my colleagues then that I won’t have any cause to leave the biochemistry department. It was a really tough decision but I worked hard at it.
To be courageous is to be strong with your decisions and to confront your fears. With courage, there are no impossibilities. It takes courage to start new things, to keep at it and to watch it grow. There Have been lots of times I will come up with projects, set deadlines and not even have the resources to execute. Yet, I remain hopeful that somehow, it will happen. I do all the needful- like reaching out and a proper follow up but still, nothing happens until the very last minute. It could be crazy, it could come with a lot of pressure, but I tell you, courage is what makes you not to press the red buttons and give up. You could be stranded even in the process, but courage makes you face it and at the end of the day, it’s always good news.
One of the things that help me develop courage for something is critical thinking. I always have a deep thought about the things I want to do and I take responsibility for my actions. The moment I am convinced, it brings the courage to do it regardless!
I will like to leave you with one of my favorite bible passages Joshua 1:9(NKJV) “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and of good courage; do not be afraid, nor be dismayed, for the LORD your God is with you wherever you go.” I recite this bible verse countless times and that has also helped me trust God with my decisions.
